Assigning Priorities: Naming Compounds
For molecules with multiple stereocenters, multiple double bonds, or a combination of stereocenters and double bonds, naming is done in a slightly different way. The atom number and spatial orientation for each double bond and stereocenter is given in parentheses, as follows: (atom number,orientation).
Consider the 2,6-dibromooctane molecule below.
It was determined previously that the both stereocenters have an
S orientation. Therefore, the complete name for this compound is (2,
S),(6,
S)-dibromooctane.
