A similar naming process is used for molecules with R and S orientations.

Consider the 3-hexanol (3-hydroxyhexane) molecules below.


It was determined previously that the molecule on the left has an R orientation. Therefore, the complete name for this compound is R-3-hexanol.

What is the complete name for the molecule on the right?

The molecule on the right has an S orientation. Therefore, the complete name for the compound on the right is S-3-hexanol.
