Assigning Priorities: Naming Compounds
All of the spatial orientations - cis, trans, E, Z, R, and S - should be used when naming a molecule. Knowledge of how to name basic molecules is assumed for the purposes of this tutorial.
When using spatial orientations in naming a molecule, the orientation should be written first.
Consider the 2-butene molecules below.


It was determined previously that the molecule on the left has a
cis orientation. Therefore, the complete name for this compound is
cis-2-butene.
