Jones Reagent as an Oxidant

The oxidation of an alcohol to a ketone can be accomplished in a number of ways. One common way to carry out this reaction is to use the Jones reagent. The Jones reagent consists of an oxygenated chromium compound. In this reaction there must be a one to one equivalency of the Jones reagent to the alcohol starting material. The problem is with this reaction is that the Jones reagent is harmful to the environment, and a lot of it is used to carry out the reaction.

Yellow Cr(VI) is reduced to blue Cr(III) when the the alcohols in the first and second dishes are oxidized. The third alcohol cannot be oxidized because it is on a tertiary carbon. The fourth dish acts as a control, where no alcohol has been added.
