Below are pictures of two different fingerprints a person can have. Each person's fingerprint is a little different, and so the person can be identified by it. Can you see how these fingerprints are different in the swirling lines? Below the fingerprints are infrared spectra scientists use to identify molecules. Each molecule gives a different spectrum that is characteristic to itself. These spectra serve the same purpose fingerprints do for people. Can you see how these two spectra are different?
