Introduction to Proteins

You are probably familiar with the word protein. Proteins can be found in the food we consume. Our body takes the proteins we eat and breaks them down into their smaller parts called amino acids. Then the amino acids are put back together to create new and different proteins the body needs. You can think of the amino acids as beads on a necklace. You could take the necklace apart and put it back together in a different order to get a new necklace.

In the picture below, the necklace on top can represent a protein we take in when we eat food. The necklace on the bottom would represent the new protein that was constructed by stringing the amino acids back together in a different order. These two proteins would have very different properties and functions in the body.
