Acidity of the Reactant: Buffer Solution

The acidity of the buffer solution is significantly less. The color of the pH paper is orange, indicating a pH of about 5.
The pH of a buffer solution is greater than that of its weak acid alone. The addition of conjugate base to form the buffer shifts the equilibrium between the acid and conjugate base to the left, resulting in a lower concentration of hydronium ions in solution. The advantage of a buffer system in most applications is that small amounts of acid or base can be added to the system without changing the pH significantly, as can be seen here.

HC2H3O2(aq) + H2O(l) → H3O(aq) + C2H3O2-(aq)
