Volume of Gas from a Mole of Liquid Nitrogen

A test tube is cooled to the temperature of liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is added to the cooled tube until about 28.6 grams are collected. The test tube is connected to the gas collection system and the stopper is removed. The liquid nitrogen boils rapidly forming nitrogen gas. Ice is condensed on the outside of the cold tube. As the liquid nitrogen evaporates, the nitrogen gas is released in the gas collection system. At zero degrees Celsius, and one atmosphere pressure, the volume of one mole of gas should be 22.4 liters. Here, under the conditions of this demonstration, when all of the liquid nitrogen has evaporated, one mole of nitrogen gas occupying 25 liters has been collected from 28.6 grams of liquid nitrogen.
Using the equation PV = nRT, one can calculate the expected volume of 28.6 g (1.02 mol) of nitrogen gas. At room temperature (25 degrees Celsius, or 298 K) and 1 atm, and using the gas constant R = 0.08206 L.atm/mol.K, one would predict that 28.6 g of liquid nitrogen would generate 25.0 L of nitrogen gas.
