Rinse the Buret

Narration
Now we are ready to rinse the buret with our titrant, sodium hydroxide. Note that a funnel is used to prevent spilling the titrant. To conserve titrant, we rinse with small portions. We perform a titrant rinse three times to remove any deionized water left in the buret.
Thoroughly rinse the internal buret walls by holding the buret on its side and rolling it. Rinse the buret tip by holding the buret over a waste container or sink and allowing all the liquid to pass through the tip. Remove the last drop and continue to do a second and third rinse.
Discussion
Using a funnel to add titrant to a buret is frowned upon by some chemists. Removing the buret from its buret holder, and pouring directly from the titrant bottle to the buret is an alternative. Student should follow the local directions.
The titrant bottle should be kept capped when not in use. This is especially important for sodium hydroxide solutions. Sodium hydroxide in solution will react with atmospheric carbon dioxide resulting in a decrease in the sodium hydroxide concentration.
