Turning the burner tube opens the air control vent. This allows increasing amounts of air to mix with the gas before combustion, leading to a hotter flame. There are 3 different recognizable flames:
A Cool Yellow flame (see slide 1) is a highly visible flame at ~200°C. It is not used for heating objects because it deposits soot on them, but is a good setting for lighting the burner. A temporarily unused burner should be left at this flame setting.
A Medium Blue flame (see slide 3) has a uniform blue color and is approx. 700°C. It can be hard to see and is used for heating solutions/liquids in glass containers (test-tubes, flasks, beakers) or when "flame drying" glassware.
A Roaring Blue flame (see slide 4) has a light blue, triangular inner cone and curved blue outer cone. The hottest spot is just above the tip of the inner cone, >1000°C. The region inside the light blue cone is cool, unburned gas It is used for direct heating of ceramic crucibles and indirect heating of glass beakers and flasks supported on a wire gauze It should not used for direct heating of glass containers as it creates localized "hot spots" that lead to "bumping" of solutions and/or cracking of glassware.
