Ferric chloride test for phenols, nitration of acetaminophen, extraction of dichloroindophenol, oxidation of phenols with sodium periodate, nucleophilic addition to quinones, "purple benzene", oxidation of 2,6-Dit-butlhydoquinone, decolorization of crystal violet, and chameleon emulsion are demonstrated.

Exploding Soap Bubbles: Hydrogen + Oxygen  
A series of three videos shows that as the ratio of oxygen to hydrogen in soap bubbles increases, the explosions that occur when the bubbles are ignited get louder. (The fact that with an excess of oxygen the explosions would become softer again is not shown.) Each video is repeated with no voice-over so that only the sounds of the explosions are heard. Five still images are provided to show the stoichiometry on the molecular scale. The videos are intended to be shown in order beginning with Hydrogen Alone and ending with hydrogen plus more oxygen.

A two-step reaction sequence in the beginning organic laboratory provides a useful introduction to the importance of multistep synthesis. In addition to introducing several common synthetic methods and techniques, a two-step preparation can quickly establish the importance of testing alternative reactions in order to optimize intermediate yields.

A phase transfer catalyzed permanganate oxidation: preparation of vanillin from isoeugenol acetate  Lampman, Gary M.; Sharpe, Steven D.
There are several attractive features in this reaction sequence for the undergraduate laboratory. These include (1) use of a protecting acetate group, (2) use of a familiar "textbook" oxidant, potassium permanganate, (3) use of phase transfer catalyst, (4) preparing of an aldehyde, (5) short reaction period, and (6) the laboratory has a pleasant aroma.
