Salicylate Detection by Complexation with Iron(III) and Optical Absorbance SpectroscopyJeremy T. Mitchell-Koch, Kendra R. Reid, and Mark E. Meyerhoff Describes an experiment for the undergraduate quantitative analysis laboratory in which salicylate, a component found in several medications and the active by-product of aspirin decomposition, is quantified through visible spectrophotometry. Mitchell-Koch, Jeremy T.; Reid, Kendra R.; Meyerhoff, Mark E. J. Chem. Educ.2008, 85, 1658.

Cocrystal Controlled Solid-State SynthesisMiranda L. Cheney, Michael J. Zaworotko, Steve Beaton, and Robert D. Singer Describes experiments that can easily be adapted to a typical undergraduate organic chemistry course and are inexpensive, relatively safe, require little or no solvent, have high atom economy, make use of non-toxic or low toxicity compounds, and generate negligible quantities of waste. Cheney, Miranda L.; Zaworotko, Michael J.; Beaton, Steve; Singer, Robert D. J. Chem. Educ.2008, 85, 1649.

Designing and Conducting a Purification Scheme as an Organic Chemistry Laboratory PracticalKate J. Graham, Brian J. Johnson, T. Nicholas Jones, Edward J. McIntee, and Chris P. Schaller Describes an open-ended laboratory practical that challenges students to evaluate when different purification techniques are appropriate. Graham, Kate J.; Johnson, Brian J.; Jones, T. Nicholas; McIntee, Edward J.; Schaller, Chris P. J. Chem. Educ.2008, 85, 1644.
SpecScan; A Utility Program for Generating Numerical Data from Printed Forms of SpectraConstantinos E. Efstathiou Obtaining digital data from analog figures is made much easier using this Windows utility. After scanning and touching-up a figure, you can import it into SpecScan to obtain X-Y data, which can then be exported to Excel or other program for additional processing.

3D NormalModes Shockwave; A Web Application for Interactive Visualization and Three Dimensional PercNickolas D. Charistos, C. A. Tsipis, Michael P. Sigalas 3D Normal Modes is a Web application for interactive visualization and three-dimensional perception of the normal modes of molecular vibration, suitable for undergraduate students in chemistry. The application uses the Macromedia Shockwave plug-in and has been designed and developed especially for the Web. It has a simple graphical user interface and requires a download of only 120 KB, allowing it to be used even with low bandwidth Internet connections. Its performance is comparable to a desktop application.
