Peer Mentoring in the General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry LaboratoriesCaleb A. Arrington, Jameica B. Hill, Ramin Radfar, David M. Whisnant, and Charles G. Bass This article describes a discovery experiment in which organic chemistry students act as mentors to general chemistry students. Members from both groups work together to isolate an unknown compound using distillation. The structure of the product is then determined collaboratively using IR and NMR spectroscopy. Analog Spectrophotometers in the Digital Age: Data Acquisition on a BudgetAlexander Y. Nazarenko and Natalie A. Nazarenko In this article we describe how to employ an inexpensive analog-to-digital converter and a user interface to Microsoft Excel to make a useful computerized spectrophotometer. Readily available types of data loggers, Vernier LabPro and digital multimeters with an RS-232 interface, were utilized. The proposed design does not compromise the quality of the measurements. The conversion of the data to the Microsoft Excel format makes it a convenient tool for a wide range of data processing applications. Nazarenko, Alexander Y.; Nazarenko, Natalie A. J. Chem. SpecScan; A Utility Program for Generating Numerical Data from Printed Forms of SpectraConstantinos E. Efstathiou Obtaining digital data from analog figures is made much easier using this Windows utility. After scanning and touching-up a figure, you can import it into SpecScan to obtain X-Y data, which can then be exported to Excel or other program for additional processing.

3D NormalModes Shockwave; A Web Application for Interactive Visualization and Three Dimensional PercNickolas D. Charistos, C. A. Tsipis, Michael P. Sigalas 3D Normal Modes is a Web application for interactive visualization and three-dimensional perception of the normal modes of molecular vibration, suitable for undergraduate students in chemistry. The application uses the Macromedia Shockwave plug-in and has been designed and developed especially for the Web. It has a simple graphical user interface and requires a download of only 120 KB, allowing it to be used even with low bandwidth Internet connections. Its performance is comparable to a desktop application.
