Vapor Pressure of a Mixture: Raoult's Law
The measurement of pressure exerted by a vapor is demonstrated using barometers. Vapor pressure varies with the strength of the intermolecular forces in the liquid. In this section we will look at vapor pressure of mixtures. We can calculate the vapor pressure of a mixture using Raoult's law.

Big Barometer
This is a demonstration of an eleven foot high barometer made with a concentrated solution of potassium tetraiodomercurate(II). A second movie compares the densities of mercury, potassium tetraiodomercurate(II) solution, and water.

Iodine Clock Reaction
A solution of hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid is added to a solution containing iodide ion, thiosulfate ion, and starch. After some time the dark blue color of a triiodide-starch complex is observed. The influences of initial reactant concentrations on the reaction time are examined, as are the influence of volume and temperature.

Halting the Briggs-Rauscher Oscillating Reaction
The Briggs-Rauscher reaction is demonstrated in three different ways. Catalase from a liver extract decomposes the hydrogen peroxide in an Briggs-Rauscher reaction, stopping the oscillations.

Blue Bottle, Red and Blue Bottle
Color changes are caused by reactions of oxygen in the air with chemicals in a solution. The colors fade over time, but can be regenerated by shaking the flask containing the solution.

Boiling by Cooling
A flask contains water and water vapor at 100C. Each time ice water is poured over the outside of the flask, the water inside the flask boils. Although the temperature of the water in the flask has decreased, in each instance boiling is observed.
