The Synthesis of N-Benzyl-2-azanorbornene via Aqueous Hetero Diels–Alder ReactionXavier Sauvage and Lionel Delaude Characterization of the product of this organic synthesis through IR and NMR data analysis provides valuable material to familiarize students with different types of protonproton coupling patterns and their typical ranges, serves to illustrate the concepts of green chemistry and atom efficiency, and can be used to exemplify structural analysis and computational studies. Sauvage, Xavier; Delaude, Lionel. J. Chem. Educ.2008, 85, 1538.

The Comparative Nucleophilicity of Naphthoxide Derivatives in Reactions with a Fast-Red TR DyeCheryl M. Mascarenhas In this experiment, organic chemistry students perform reactions between three naphthyl acetate derivatives and the diazonium salt Fast-Red TR. Students discover under what conditions the hydrolysis and electrophilic aromatic substitution is fastest and slowest, allowing them to conclude that latter, rather than the former, is rate-limiting. Synthesis and Characterization of 9-Hydroxyphenalenone Using 2D NMR TechniquesBenjamin Caes and Dell Jensen Jr. The synthesis of 9-Hydroxyphenalenone produces a planar multicyclic beta-ketoenol, the tautomerization of which results in C2v symmetry on the NMR time scale, thus simplifying the spectra and providing a unique structure for teaching 2D NMR spectroscopy. 3D NormalModes Shockwave; A Web Application for Interactive Visualization and Three Dimensional PercNickolas D. Charistos, C. A. Tsipis, Michael P. Sigalas 3D Normal Modes is a Web application for interactive visualization and three-dimensional perception of the normal modes of molecular vibration, suitable for undergraduate students in chemistry. The application uses the Macromedia Shockwave plug-in and has been designed and developed especially for the Web. It has a simple graphical user interface and requires a download of only 120 KB, allowing it to be used even with low bandwidth Internet connections. Its performance is comparable to a desktop application.

The Effect of Anharmonicity on Diatomic Vibration; A Spreadsheet SimulationWilliam F. Coleman, Kieran F. Lim Instructors and students can use this spreadsheet to quickly and easily observe how the shape of a one-dimensional vibrational potential energy curve and its associated vibrational quantum energy levels depend on the anharmonicity. This illustrates the connection between the harmonic (approximation) and anharmonic descriptions of molecular vibrations.
