Pedagogies:
Diastereoselectivity in the Reduction of α-Hydroxyketones. An Experiment for the Chemistry Major Organic Laboratory  David B. Ball
Describes a research type, inquiry-based project where students synthesize racemic ahydroxyketones using umpolung, a polarity-reversal approach; investigate chelating versus non-chelating reducing agents; and determine the diastereoselectivity of these reducing processes by NMR spectroscopy.
Ball, David B. J. Chem. Educ. 2006, 83, 101.

Cyclooctane conformational analysis via mechanical and computational models  Fitzgerald, Jeffrey P.
Description of an exercise in which students use both mechanical and computational models to identify and quantify various types of strains in different conformations of a molecule.

Use of polar maps in conformational analysis  Ounsworth, James P.; Weller, Larry
A relatively simple procedure to identify different or similar conformations of large ring structures (generating polar maps of torsional angles).

Hexane 1 (GCMP)  David M. Whisnant
Hexane 1: this is a resource in the collection "General Chemistry Multimedia Problems". Hexane, a liquid hydrocarbon with the formula C6H14, burns when ignited in the presence of oxygen. In this problem we will observe videos of this combustion reaction. General Chemistry Multimedia Problems ask students questions about experiments they see presented using videos and images. The questions asked apply concepts from different parts of an introductory course, encouraging students to decompartmentalize the material.
