Synthesis and Characterization of Aldol Condensation Products from Unknown Aldehydes and Ketones Nicholas G. Angelo, Laura K. Henchey, Adam J. Waxman, James W. Canary, Paramjit S. Arora, and Donald Wink Describes an experiment in which students perform the aldol condensation on an unknown aldehyde and ketone and make use of TLC, column chromatography, recrystallization, and characterization by 1H NMR, GCMS, and FTIR. Angelo, Nicholas G.; Henchey, Laura K.; Waxman, Adam J.; Canary, James W.; Arora, Paramjit S.; Wink, Donald. J. Chem. Educ. 2007, 84, 1816.

Teaching Catalytic Antibodies to Undergraduate Students: An Organic Chemistry Lab Experiment Avidor Shulman, Ehud Keinan, Doron Shabat, and Carlos F. Barbas III This lab project deals with antibody-catalyzed aldol condensations. It includes the (i) synthesis of substrate and product; (ii) HPLC characterization of the antibody-catalyzed reaction; (iii) titration of the antibody active-site; and (iv) analysis of the kinetics of the antibody-catalyzed reaction. The lab project provides training not only in biocatalysis but in a number of related aspects of chemical and biochemical research, including organic synthesis, mechanistic organic chemistry, and chemical kinetics. Shulman, Avidor; Keinan, Ehud; Shabat, Doron; Barbas, Carlos F., III. J. Chem. Educ. 1999, 76, 977.

Asymmetric Synthesis (by Garry Procter) Brenda Kesler Following an introductory chapter on the principles of asymmetric induction are seven chapters on individual classes of reactions: additions to carbonyl compounds, alpha-substitution using chiral enolates, asymmetric aldol reactions, additions to C-C double bonds, reduction and oxidation, rearrangements, and hydrolysis and esterification. Kesler, Brenda. J. Chem. Educ. 1998, 75, 546.
