Superconductivity A pellet of 1-2-3 yttrium barium copper oxide (YBa2Cu3O7-x) is cooled with liquid nitrogen. A magnet placed above the pellet is levitated. At a higher temperature the magnet rests on the pellet, but cooling once again causes the magnet to rise. The levitated magnet is spun with plastic tweezers

Conductimetric Titration Aqueous sulfuric acid and barium hydroxide both conduct electricity; distilled water does not. As barium hydroxide solution is added to sulfuric acid, conductivity decreases until it reaches zero at the equivalence point. As excess barium hydroxide is added, the conductivity gradually increases.

Memory Metal When a piece of metal wire spelling the letters ICE is pulled apart, it deforms. When the wire is placed in hot water, it "remembers" its original shape, once again forming the letters ICE. (The memory metal used in this demonstration was provided by the Institute for Chemical Eduction.) A simulation of the processes at the atomic level is shown.

Hardness of Solid Substances - Grinding A number of metals and nonmetals are ground with a mortar and pestle. The nonmetals shown here are all soft (due to weak intermolecular forces), but the metals vary in hardness.
