Reaction, Microscale: Potassium Dichromate with Silver Nitrate A crystal of potassium dichromate is carefully combined with a solution of silver nitrate under a microscope. The reaction takes some time, so it is shown in a series of seven sequential videos. To see the entire reaction you need to play all seven.

Extraction of Acid with Base Water and diethyl ether are shaken in a separatory funnel with a small amount of red indophenol. The non-ionic indophenol remains in the ether layer, coloring it red. Addition of sodium hydroxide converts the indophenol to its blue ionic acid anion which is extracted into the water layer turning it blue.

Reactions of Sulfurous Acid These demonstrations illustrate the production and effects of sulfur dioxide, a pollutant generated by the burning of sulfur impurities in coal. The sulfurous acid produced by dissolving sulfur dioxide in water is allowed to react with various forms of calcium carbonate found in nature, namely marble, limestone, chalk, and eggshell.

Crystallization of Supersaturated Sodium Acetate A supersaturated solution of sodium acetate is poured onto one small sodium acetate crystal. Crystals form from the liquid immediately upon contact with the seed crystal. A thermometer shows that the crystallization process is exothermic. A chemical hot pack is shown as an example of a commercially available supersaturated solution.

Ammonia Fountains - Multiple System of multiple ammonia fountains are set up and run. A separatory funnel, four round-bottomed flasks, and some tubing form a closed system. One end of the tubing is immersed in an acetic acid solution that contains universal indicator. The glassware has been filled with ammonia gas. The stopcock of the funnel is closed.

Vapor Pressure: Drinking Bird A novelty store "Drinking Bird" repeatedly dips is beak into a beaker of water and then bobs back to an upright position. Visible movement of a liquid in the bird's body accompanies the bobbing; the movement is caused by changing vapor pressure of the liquid due to different temperatures at the bird's head and the bird's body.

Vapor Pressure of a Mixture: Raoult's Law The measurement of pressure exerted by a vapor is demonstrated using barometers. Vapor pressure varies with the strength of the intermolecular forces in the liquid.
In this section we will look at vapor pressure of mixtures. We can calculate the vapor pressure of a mixture using Raoult's law.
