A Non-Mercury Thermometer Alternative for Use in Older Melting Point Apparatuses  Lois K. Ongley, Clayton S. Kern, and Barry W. Woods
This work demonstrates that lab-calibrated thermocouples are a statistically accurate and economically reasonable substitute for mercury thermometers to measure the melting point temperature for organic compounds in older Mel-Temp devices.

An Improved Preparation of 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine Reagent  Ben Ruekberg and Eric Rossoni
In the analysis of aldehydes and ketones (both for characterizing the functional group and identifying such compounds by the melting points of their derivatives), 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine reagent is often used. Of the several formulations of this reagent, the most popular uses sulfuric acid. The method involves making a paste of 2,4-dinitro-phenylhydrazine in concentrated sulfuric acid, dispersion of the paste in ethanol, addition of water, and the filtration of the reagent. This improvement uses milder conditions, which may obviate the need for the final filtration. Those responsible for preparation of stock reagent solutions for classes should note that this method facilitates scaling up the preparation.

A simple, inexpensive insert is described for preventing flooding in lab sinks. The insert is essentially a tube with slots cut into the side that fits snugly into the drain outlet, preventing water buildup and providing additional drainage sites to avoid constriction by small lab items and paper towels.

Teflon Tape--The Leaky Buret Remedy  Brett C. Boshco and John J. Griffin
As a remedy for buret leaks caused by an improper tip-to-stopcock fit, Teflon tape should be wrapped tightly around the glass tip before its insertion into the stopcock. This tape will fill voids as the glass tip is pushed up while twisting into the stopcock, providing the seal needed where silicone grease failed.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a buildup of flammable vapors that were ignited by a drying oven. Hot weather, poor air circulation, and ductless fume hoods may have contributed to conditions favorable to initiating the fire.
