Acids_and_Bases : BufferingCapacity (20 Variations) If a buffer is prepared using 0.75 mol CH3COOH and 0.45 mol CH3COO- in 1 liter of aqueous solution, is the buffering capacity of the solution great enough to maintain its pH if 10 g NaOH is added?
Determining the Solubility Product of Fe(OH)3: An Equilibrium Study with Environmental SignificanceMichelle Meighan, Joseph MacNeil, and Renee Falconer This study explores the environmental impact of acidic mine drainage by investigating the relationship between pH and the aqueous solubility of heavy metals. Students precipitate Fe(OH)3 from acidic FeCl3 and NaOH and use the concentrations of ferric and hydroxide ionsdetermined through pH and flame spectroscopyto calculate the Ksp of Fe(OH)3. A Simplified Model To Predict the Effect of Increasing Atmospheric CO2 on Carbonate Chemistry in the OceanBrian J. Bozlee, Maria Janebo, and Ginger Jahn The chemistry of dissolved inorganic carbon in seawater is reviewed and used to predict the potential effect of rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It is found that calcium carbonate may become unsaturated in cold surface seawater by the year 2100, resulting in the destruction of calcifying organisms such as coral. Experimental Determination of Ultraviolet Radiation Protection of Common MaterialsSusana C. A. Tavares, Joaquim C. G. Esteves de Silva, and João Paiva The oxidation of iodide is used as an indicator for the degree of exposure to UV radiation and to investigate the protection given by a simulation of ozone using plexiglass plates, sunscreen lotions, cotton cloth with different colors, and aqueous solutions with different concentrations of natural organic matter. Tavares, Susana C. A.; Esteves de Silva, Joaquim C. G.; Paiva, João. J. Chem. Educ.2007, 84, 1963.
Ammonia (GCMP)David M. Whisnant Ammonia fountain: this is a resource in the collection "General Chemistry Multimedia Problems". In an ammonia fountain, a flask is filled with ammonia gas. A tube from the flask extends into a pan of water that contains phenolphthalein. When a rubber bulb full of water is squeezed, the water squirts into the flask. Water from the pan then is pushed into the flask and the indicator changes color. General Chemistry Multimedia Problems ask students questions about experiments they see presented using videos and images. The questions asked apply concepts from different parts of an introductory course, encouraging students to decompartmentalize the material.

Introduction of Aquatic Chemistry in General Chemistry Curriculum;Spreadsheet Calculation ApproachesChulsung Kim Fundamental aquatic chemistry concepts may be introduced in general chemistry classes by computing ionization fractions and buffer intensity of aqueous phase carbonate systems. This Excel spreadsheet may used to build graphic presentations of a titration curve, distribution diagram, and buffer intensity as a function of pH. Accompanying activities are designed to enhance the concepts of acid-base equilibrium through exploring the relationship between pKa/pKb, pH of the solution, ionization fractions, and buffer intensity, and to exercise students graphing skills.
